The Consolidated guidelines on HIV testing services provided by the WHO bring together existing guidance relevant to the provision of HIV testing services (HTS) and addresses issues and elements for effective delivery of HTS that are common in a variety of settings, contexts and diverse populations.
In addition, this document provides a new recommendation to support HTS by trained lay providers, considers the potential of HIV self-testing to increase access to and coverage of HIV testing, and outlines focused and strategic approaches to HTS that are needed to support the new UN 90 –90 –90 global HIV targets – the first target being diagnosis of 90% of people with HIV.
Moreover, this guidance will assist national programme managers and service providers, including those from community-based programmes, in planning for and implementing HTS.
The document contains:
- Consolidated guidelines on HIV testing services
- Fact sheet to the WHO consolidated guidelines on HIV testing services:
Recent estimates report that only 51% of people with HIV know their HIV status. In order to reach the UN 90 –90 –90 goals it is critical that HIV testing services be strategically expanded to diagnose as many people with HIV as early as possible.
This fact sheet includes data on HIV testing services reported by countries to the Global AIDS Response Progress Reporting (GARPR) (WHO, UNAIDS, UNICEF) as of July 2015. - Policy brief: WHO recommends HIV testing by lay providers:
New Consolidated guidelines on HIV testing services from the WHO recommend that lay providers who are trained can, using rapid diagnostic tests, independently conduct safe and effective HIV testing services. - Policy brief: WHO recommendations to assure HIV testing quality:
New Consolidated guidelines on HIV testing services from WHO recommend standardized HIV testing strategies to correctly diagnose HIV infection.
